Ring 3D print

We have a 3D printer at work, and I wanted to take a stab at using it. People have been making the coolest things!

I thought it would be fun to model and 3D print out some of my statue paintings, but before I did that, maybe try out some smaller, easier tests so I could see what the printer was capable of. These are meant to be rings.. because I have a simliar favorite ring thought I could make a version that looks faceted like a 3D model.. and an industrial-looking matte gray.

Here are some steps

Modeling them in XSI:

There are many steps between the last one and the next. The boring steps are: 1. Exporting the OBJ it into Maya and re-exporting it as a 3D printer file. 2. Importing it into the ZCorp printer software and choosing settings.

Then, finally sending to the printer, and waiting overnight (7 hours) for it to be plotted out. The next day, using various little vacuums, scraped away the dust revealing the shapes below. Then dunked em in a super-glue like substance which helped to strengthen em.

There are 3 here, 2 prints of 1 design, 1 print of the other. I printed out 6 total, each had different parameters. These turned out the best.

Next step is to sand them and maybe even paint it with model primer. It's too bad they came out 4x the size I needed .. So I might turn them into napkin holders or Christmas ornaments :(

Here's some progress shots of a painting i've been working on. It's been awesome getting to work with natural light again. It's been giving some amazing depth to a really simple scene. These sessions are 3 hours each, so the first image is 6 hours.

I was going to give up on this one - the pose was a composition challenge, and there are some new cool lights in the studio that made painting the skin tones near impossible. A couple defeated artists even left early. Anyway glad I stuck through it..

Been painting a lot lately, there are a couple pieces chilling in the freezer.. stay tuned

I forgot all my palette knives at home, which I love.. I had to go about this one a totally different way. Pretty good lesson. The only thing I regret is the 'fancy' brush strokes that make no sense..

while i was painting this one at the cement factory, i thought i was alone. until an 18-wheeler truck parked in the lot. i thought they were going to kick me out for sure. suddenly, a person came out of the truck, holding some papers and ran toward me. out of the corner of my eye, i saw it wasn't a burly truck driver, no! it was the truck driver's cute little daughter, she asked if i knew the way to the Fiber Company. (i'd passed there earlier) "actually, i passed it on the way" i told her, and gave her directions. she smiles, says thanks and scuttles away.. and i go back to painting.

here's a couple figure paintings from aug 3 and 10, of the same figure. i was planning on reworking the bottom painting the second week, but got discouraged and painted a new one instead.

(was shocking to take the bottom painting into Photoshop and hit 'auto levels' and the painting looked a million times better. better luck next time!)

Well, I could've gone to the tropics with my company... instead I stayed in Seattle and spent a week painting in a beautifully-lit room with about 8 other ladies, 8 hours a day. Still Life Painting in Oil workshop with Rita Natarova. At the end of the week, I was exhausted. Rita is an amazing painter. She is an amazing teacher. She gave me so many new ideas, challenges, and helpful advice. I'm most grateful for her challenges -- I thought I knew how to see, but apparently not well as I could have. I learned so much.

Here are some of my paintings. Some good, some bad, all learning.. The first one is the final 2 day painting, the rest are 1 hour to 1 day paintings, from the beginning of the week to the end.

so i signed up for an oil painting class with John Rizzotto at Gage, and am enjoying every single minute. learning something every hour - everything is new. and paint gets everywhere.. hands, forehead, knees, feet.
